How to Create a Productive Working Environment at Home
November 10. 2023
Hi! I’m Sayaka Minami, a Japanese minimalist, and a professional organizer.
A remote job has become common in the past few years, and some of you may have experienced working from home or are in that situation right now.
I am one of those who work from home. To work comfortably and concentrate, I have tried many ways to create a better environment at home.
In this episode, I will share some of my ideas on how to create such an environment working from home.
1. No Need for a Dedicated Work Desk
When you start working from home, you may be tempted to get all sorts of things just for work.
However, we recommend that you start by using what you already have at home.
A dining table set can be substituted for the desk and chair needed for computer work.
I have been using a kitchen counter and standing up while I work. I don’t sit on a chair while working.
It speeds up my work more than sitting down because my legs get tired and I want to get work done as soon as possible.
It is a great way, especially in the morning since I am still fresh mentally and physically feeling strong.
I do step exercises while working to get some exercise to keep in good shape.
2. Don’t Be Distracted
Since the home is where you have a daily life, it can be a place to be hard to concentrate on work. For example, if you see unwashed dishes in your kitchen sink or an untidy room, you can be distracted.
I think it is important to keep your eyes away from everyday scenes. Try facing windows, walls, and other places where there are relatively few objects. This will help prevent being distracted.
3. Use Office Tool and Gadget
For a remote job, you may spend many hours on the computer for remote meetings, exchanging messages, creating presentation materials, and so on.
Sitting on a chair for a long time tends to a strain on the body, and you may suffer from back pain and stiff shoulders.
Using a useful office tool and gadget may help reduce these burdens.
I am using a laptop computer stand.
I found this item when I was looking for a way to get some exercise. By using it, I can get work done more efficiently.
It can be adjusted to five different heights and is compact and portable.
Even if you want to focus on your work, it is important to keep your home for yourself and your family.
Trying to set up a perfect office-like space is not always the right answer.
Why not start with a little ingenuity so that you can instantly switch between work time and private time?
